Stepping Back Into the Room
Hi friends,
Recently, I attended my first real career event since becoming a mom, and it felt like an important moment for me.
I was invited to a Networking and Thought Leadership Evening hosted by Lloyds Banking Group in Bristol. The event brought together professionals from all walks of life to connect, share experiences, and learn from senior leaders.
When I first saw the invitation, I was both excited and hesitant. Motherhood changes a lot of things, including how you show up in professional spaces. Between work, home, and caring for my little one, it can sometimes feel easier to stay within your routine.
But something in me knew it was important to go.
Walking into the room, I felt a mix of nerves and curiosity. It had been a while since I attended an event like this, and I wasn’t sure what to expect. But as the evening unfolded, it quickly reminded me why spaces like this matter.
There were conversations, shared stories, and moments of reflection about career journeys and opportunities ahead. Listening to the panel and connecting with others in the room made me realise how powerful it is to be surrounded by people navigating similar paths.
The evening was also warm and welcoming in the little details. They served jollof rice and curried goat, which instantly made the atmosphere feel familiar and celebratory. Before leaving, we were given small souvenirs, including a mug and a lanyard, simple reminders of the evening and the connections made.
For me, the event was more than just networking. It was a reminder that growth often happens when we step outside our comfort zone.
Motherhood has added a new dimension to my life, but it has not taken away my ambition, my curiosity, or my desire to grow professionally.
If anything, it has strengthened it.
Attending this event felt like a small but meaningful step back into those spaces, and I’m glad I said yes to the invitation.
And like many moments I want to remember, I forgot to take pictures as usual.
Sometimes all it takes is showing up.
